White-Stumpf, a medical service corps officer and paratrooper, served with a joint special operations task force on a cultural support team working with women and children in Afghanistan. While conducting combat operations in Kandahar province, White-Stumpf and two other Soldiers were killed by an improvised explosive device.

Bailey enlisted in the Army in August 1942. After training at Tuskegee Army Air Field, Ala., he was assigned to the 99th Fighter Squadron, the first all-black fighter pilot squadron in the U.S. Army Air Forces,  famously known as the “Tuskegee Airmen.” Credited with downing two enemy aircraft, he received a Distinguished Flying Cross for his service in World War II.

In September 1994, Yoshitani was a Military Police platoon leader to a 1991 military coup in Haiti. Yoshitani was part of a peacekeeping force that confiscated more than 30,000 firearms, helped maintain a secure and stable environment, provided technical expertise and logistical support for democratic elections nationwide and assisted in the training of a new civilian police force.

Wehrle was born in 1941 in San Antonio. He received his bachelor’s degree from Texas Technological College in Lubbock, Texas, in 1964 and a master of fine arts in painting and printmaking from the Pratt Institute in New York. He was the officer in charge of Combat Artist Team I in Vietnam from August to December 1966.

Robert L. Howard, a member of the Army’s elite Special Forces, was a sergeant first class in 1968. On December 30, 1968, he engaged in a mission to rescue a fellow Green Beret. During the mission, Howard sustained his beleaguered platoon for nearly 48 hours before orchestrating extraction and medical evacuation. By 1971, when President Richard Nixon placed the Medal of Honor around his neck, Howard had served five tours in Vietnam and had been wounded 14 different times.
