National Highway System

In 1990, the IDHS was officially renamed the Dwight David Eisenhower National System of Interstate and Defense Highways in honor of the man who signed the 1956 funding act that broke ground on the new highway system, and who, as an Army Soldier, participated in the first transcontinental motor convoy to bring nationwide attention to the state of America’s roads.
